War Memorials

Tilstock

The Tilstock War Memorial commemorates those local men who died in World War I and World War II The memorial takes the form of a high Celtic Cross in the graveyard of St. Mary's parish church.

Tilstock is a village and ecclesiastical parish near the town of Whitchurch in Shropshire, England, close to the border with Wales. It includes the villages of Tilstock, Prees Heath and Broughall.

The area had strong military connections. Prees Heath Army Camp was opened in 1915 as a training base for the British Army, it had a capacity for 30,000 men training in trench warfare. At the outbreak of World War II, the site became an internment camp for screening Austrian and German refugees and was later converted to a prisoner of war camp until 1941. An airfield was constructed in the site by mid-1942, which was known as "Whitchurch Heath" until 1943, when it became known as "RAF Tilstock". At the end of the Second World War the camp became home to Polish Army families.

St. Mary's churchyard in Tilstock has a large number of military graves of men not connected to the area.
